Year 3 Jet Off!

Year 3 jetted off to Manchester Airport this week to understand more about the world of aviation.  Having spent this half term looking at the destination of Barcelona, and why tourists choose to go on holiday there, we spent the day learning about the different roles that people play at the airport to ensure a safe and happy journey.  Once again, Year 3 demonstrated the Willows way throughout. They were confident, independent and showed just how much they love to learn through their range of insightful questions.

We began inside the fast-paced Terminal 2 building, where we visited currency exchange to compare British pound with a range of foreign currencies. Then we looked at the check in and bag drop areas and discussed how the bags get on to each plane safely.  We examined the departure boards and talked about where we wanted to go to, and even saw a flight going to Barcelona!  We met lots of people along the way, from cabin crew helping with check in, to border control officials, and even saw a pilot who had just landed from Mexico!

Back at the Runway Visitor centre, we were blown away by eating our lunch next to the runway; watching the planes take off and land was quite an experience! After a short playtime on the plane themed play park, we re-commenced our tour and started by      visiting the Concorde hangar.  We spoke about its history, and saw the differences in its design and shape, and were all amazed by the speed it once achieved.  Then it was time to go and see inside two old passenger planes. For many of us, this was the first time stepping inside of a plane, and we were excited and intrigued by how planes fly. We used the last part of the day to role play many of the different roles within a plane and the airport itself, discussed the history of aviation, and finally, each child got to sit in the cockpit; a real dream come true for our pilots and cabin crew of the future!
