Religious Education| How we do it
As mentioned in our School Intent, we develop our children holistically through a combination of what is taught, how it is taught and all daily interactions we have within our school. We acknowledge different backgrounds and experiences, and recognise different starting points. As part of our commitment to progression, mastery and depth, our RE curriculum is well-sequenced and key concepts are revisited and developed on, ensuring that excellent progress is made by all pupils.
Each RE Mini Adventure is focussed around a theme, and over the course of the unit, children will have the opportunity to Explore, Engage, and finally Reflect – thus strengthening their personal development. During the Explore and Engage sessions, children will enhance their substantive and disciplinary knowledge through a variety of ‘ways of knowing’. Ways of Knowing in the Willows RE curriculum comprise various techniques, such as reading excerpts from holy scriptures, exploring religious stories, interpreting artwork or poetry, conducting Q&A sessions and visiting religious places. Again, we encourage relevant trips and visitors to enrich the experiences, and complement our Willows Way ethos of ‘love learning’. The diverse range of methods used to gain knowledge guarantees the authenticity and accuracy of the knowledge being taught so to avoid pupils’ misconceptions. The reflect session will enable children to develop their own perspectives in relation to other people’s beliefs. British Values are also thought about and discussed with the children at relevant places within their Mini Adventures.
Curriculum Progression
Personal Development
Our Personal Development curriculum has been designed with the children at the very heart of it. It is intrinsic across our curriculum focussing on the importance of developing the ‘whole child’ so they have a clear sense of identity and individuality, that enables them to become responsible, respectful, active citizens who make a valuable and positive contribution to our society.
Our ‘Cultural Capital,’ ‘Character Curriculum’ and ‘Living in the Wider World’ stand of the Personal Development curriculum are a primary focus within RE. By exposing children to different cultures and religions, we aim to develop their understanding and engagement within their community and respectfully consider their own views and the views of others within today’s diverse Britain. Throughout their time at Willows children have opportunities to engage within our religious community, visit places of worship and welcome visitors to provide our children with a wealth of knowledge about the world them. A robust vocabulary progression in RE improves their ability to articulate and understand religious beliefs as well as develop their communication skills beyond the curriculum.
