Phonics Overview

At Willows, we believe that every child can become a confident and fluent reader and writer. In order to help achieve this, we follow the RoboPhonics Systematic Synthetic Phonics scheme which has been created for Willows Primary School and validated by the DfE.

The RoboPhonics Systematic Synthetic Programme ensures our children are well placed to apply their phonics skills as the primary approach to decoding for reading and encoding for writing.

We teach grapheme/phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and common exception words (CEWs/tricky words) in the order suggested in the government's ‘Letters and Sounds’ document (with some minor alterations to ‘tricky’ words and a carefully thought-through established sequence for the order of Phase 5 graphemes.)
