Reading Meets Science in Year 3!

This year, our Year 3 pupils celebrated World Book Day in a very special way.  Willows was selected to be a panellist school for the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize, which meant the children had the exciting responsibility of helping to judge this year’s shortlisted books.

During the afternoon, the classes explored all six finalist titles together.  They spent time reading, discussing and sharing their thoughts about each book, thinking carefully about what they enjoyed, what interested them, and what they were less keen on.  After some lively discussions, the pupils cast their votes for their favourites.

The results showed a clear trend - books about rocks and dinosaurs were the overwhelming favourites!  This certainly surprised some of the adults in the room, who had fallen in love with the beautiful illustrations and poetic storytelling in some of the other titles.  It was wonderful to hear the children confidently explaining their choices and debating their ideas with one another.

It was a fantastic way to celebrate World Book Day, bringing together our love of science and reading, encouraging curiosity, discussion and a real joy of sharing books together.
