History | How we do it
In the EYFS, History is taught continually through the ‘Understanding the World-Past and Present’ area of learning within the Early Years Framework.
For key Stage 1 and 2 knowledge of different eras of History are taught in each year group. This enables pupils to have an in depth understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. We aim for all children to become curious through our discovery, cross-curricular, Mini-Adventure approach to the teaching and learning of History, including first hand experiences which will ignite their love of learning the subject. Each year group has History specific Mini-Adventures to develop lifelong skills to become Historians. During the Mini-Adventure children are given a wide range of experiences using a variety of teaching methods such as; Objects, Storytelling, Drama, Questioning and History investigations and Enquiry. Each year group is accountable for introducing new Historical terms as well as revisiting previously taught vocabulary. Children are expected to use this vocabulary consistently, developing their ability to articulate both within and beyond History lessons.
We have developed a curriculum ensuring a balance between building on previous years’ substantive knowledge and the progression of History as a discipline year on year. The key, transferable skills will develop throughout school and also prepare and build a solid foundation ready for Secondary school and life beyond that. We believe it is important that our children are rounded individuals and understand their past. The Willows Way highlights our values and ethos within this subject ensuring that there is continuity across the school and that staff and pupils are aware of the high expectations that we set.
